The CUDDLE project developed
"naturally" in Tembisa (Gauteng) because of the need for
teachers, who own/run crèches or pre-schools, to receive formal training
and education. CUDDLE has the following process:
Teachers register for a
six week (two hour session a week) crèche course. The
course is very comprehensive and really equips those who attend with valuable
knowledge and skills. During the six weeks the most deserving ladies for further
support are identified according to certain criteria (attendance,
participation, attitude, years "service" to the community, keenness, self
motivation etc.) At the end of the course each teacher is visited personally
at their crèche.
Further evaluation is then made on location of the needs of the
teacher. Crèches that qualify are then added to the list of crèches we earmark
and prioritise for support. As time, resources and funds permit, we
systematically help these crèches according to the priorities of the needs they
have.
Four crèche courses have been
presented during 2009/2010. Over 80 ladies have been trained and there are over 150 on the waiting list for the
next
courses. The HUGE demand for advanced courses will be addressed in the near
future.
More information/photos of the crèche
course as well as the crèches being supported can be seen at the links given at the bottom

The work (support)
for the CUDDLE project entails:
ü Upgrades - Repair work to the crèches of broken equipment/structures,
Maintenance of equipment/structures, Modifications, Installation of new
equipment etc, Renewal of old charts/teaching material.
ü Development - providing the course to develop teachers, providing further
advanced courses to enable teachers to be more creative, efficient and
effective, developing teaching material and equipment.
ü Directives - administrative and guidance work,
Compiling of prospectuses, Helping teachers to comply with the governmental
regulations, Guidelines on various aspects of running crèches/pre-schools such
as Finance; Nutrition; Safety; First Aid; Parent interaction and involvement;
general advise on various topics
ü Liaison - We fulfil a HUGE role in being the central channel of distribution for
people who want to donate goods and moneys to these crèches.
Goods include second hand Clothing; Food; Second hand equipment.
We also co-ordinate volunteers from overseas and locally to come and help with
the work in the Townships
ü
Education - Giving of pre-school classes to the children on a roster basis
weekly. This helps the teacher to get a welcome 2 hour break once a
week in their busy and demanding schedules. The classes include
further courses and classes to the teachers regarding all aspects of effectively
preparing children for school
Currently we have 7 crèches on the priority list and we have done very rewarding
work at all of them. The work is mainly done by volunteers and included
painting, repairs and maintenance. In all of these crèches the before and after
results were amazing - much to the satisfaction of the volunteers and delight of
the crèche teachers.
