Background
The school was very run down: sections of the roof blown off with rain pouring into classrooms, no doors (and even no doorframes) on some classrooms, lots of broken windows, some missing window frames, no playground/field, no electricity, one tap, a revolting "toilet block", no staff/admin facilities, no shelving or storage space, no colour - just bare classrooms with desks and chairs and a blackboard. No books for the children to read and obviously no library.
The school has an annual grant from the Government of R10 000. Emakheni Primary School has one class for each Grade from Grade 0 to Grade 7 with about 25-30 children in each class. This grant has to cover all expenses other than books and stationery – ie: monthly electricity and water accounts (which is why there is no longer electricity at the school as they can’t afford it), school maintenance, outings, staff education, Photostatting, telephone accounts, etc. Understandably it is a tough job keeping the school running on less than R1000 per month.
ACTION
The following support work had been done:
- Roof and fascias fixed.
- Books were collected for both the children’s enjoyment and educational help for the teachers. Lots of books were donated, and many new ones purchased.
- A building contractor was organised to repair and replace the doors, frames and locks.
- A P2P team was sent out there in July to build a Jungle gym.
- New shelving in each classroom.
- Planting of a vegetable garden with the children and gardening equipment was supplied for each class for continued care.
- A playing field has been levelled.
- Indigenous trees have been planted around the school grounds.
FUTURE SUPPORT
- Windows still need fixing.
- Field needs grassing and soccer posts.
- A basketball net/netball net.
- A serious upgrade of the ablution facilities is required.
- Electricity connection and some electrical repairs on old fittings required.
- Administration facilities would help the staff.
- Many more books, posters and education materials are needed.
