Mariannhill is a township about 20 kms west of Durban. The premises pictured right/left/below were obtained by the COP Trust in June 2008 to act as a community centre. From this location, the COP Trust has organised and run several activities in this area, such as classes for adults, holiday clubs for children and soccer programs for the youth. These soccer programs aim at teaching life skills through the game of soccer.
In September 2008, funding was obtained from Altech Autopage Cellular (R 1.2 million) to build a new pre-school and community development centre at this location to further service the Mariannhill community. Building is about to commence to develop the existing property into a centre that will provide vital services to the local families. The Mariannhill Pre-school and Community Support Centre project has as its primary objective to provide formative education and life skills training to young children from the Mariannhill community aged 3 to 6 who would otherwise only receive formal education from age 7. In addition the centre will provide other key support services to parents, grand-parents and others responsible for the day-to-day care of the children, such as:
- Food programmes and medical clinics for those caring for children in the community who are orphans;
- Life skills classes for the adults in the community; and
- A youth centre to act as the base for sports programs and life skills development.
This exciting new COP Trust centre was launched in February 2009.
